SUBMISSION GRAPPLING Training

AT YAMASAKI ACADEMY WOODBRIDGE

Submission Grappling is, essentially, wrestling with submission holds.  Similar to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu but without the uniform and belt, this style has been gaining a lot of popularity.

We are not new to the No-Gi Submission Grappling game here at Yamasaki Academy Woodbridge.  BJJ Black Belt coaches Joe Cunningham, Francisco Salguero, David Tepper, Scott Sperling, and Tim Shriner have all been training and competing in both since the early days of competitions.  Coach Joe has been working the leg lock game since he started training in 1998.

We have been fortunate enough to have outstanding wrestling coaches here at Yamasaki Academy Woodbridge.  Our wrestling coach, Bryon Bruce, is a former Olympic Training Center wrestling coach as well as a BJJ Black Belt.  He was also one of the wrestling and MMA coaches at the Grudge Training Center in Colorado.  We aren’t just BJJ players who also do No-Gi!

ACADEMY AMENITIES

We have over 3000 sq ft of matted training area divided into three sections.  The “Grappling” training area is 1500 sq ft and uses a unique floating floor system of high density foam blocks attached to plywood.  Our Tatami style mats then sit on top of the plywood to create a slightly bouncy floor that absorbs impact and reduces injury.

We have a strict “No shoes on the mats, no bare feet on the mats” policy at the Academy.  But, just in case, we have multiple Defense Soap Foot Cleaning Stations positioned around the training areas for students to clean their feet when getting on the mats.  We also keep extra flip-flops and slides in the locker rooms and by the bathrooms for students to use.

The Academy has multiple Google Nest cameras covering the training areas.  This allows us to stream classes remotely as well as record and store every class for up to 30 days so students can get access to training and sparring content.  We also use have 4 distinct timers for each training area that are controlled by wall-mounted tablets.

TRAIN WITH PURPOSE

BENEFITS OF TRAINING

SELF-DEFENSE

Not getting hurt is possible without having to hurt someone else.   Submission grappling teaches one how to neutralize strength and size in their opponent using as little effort as possible.

CONFIDENCE

Progress in grappling will be because of the effort the student puts in. Students learn that they are rewarded directly for their own efforts.

HEALTH & FITNESS

Submission Grappling is a very fast paced combat sport that requires bursts of energy and lot’s of scrambles.  This burns a lot of calories.

FOCUS

Pay attention to the details. Submission Grappling can’t be learned if you aren’t paying attention to what you are being taught.
