Thank you for choosing us!  We appreciate your trust and look forward to working with you or your family member(s).

Starting your journey in Combat Sports, while exciting, can also be intimidating for new people.  Even experienced students who have trained at other academies know that each place is different.  How things work at one may not be the same at our Academy.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR FOR MY FIRST CLASS?

Please wear or bring clothes appropriate for a workout. Shorts and a T-shirt is typically fine. Spats or leggings are also appropriate as are rash guards.  Please do not wear clothing with glitter and remove any jewelry you may have on you.

DO I NEED SOCKS OR SHOES FOR CLASS?

Nope. We go bear feet when we are on the mats. Unless you have a need to, please do not wear socks on the mats. It’s slippery with socks.

What protective gear do I need?

Regardless of the class you are attending, we recommend a mouth guard and groin protection. We do not provide this equipment at the Academy, but you can get it at Dick’s Sporting Goods, Wal-Mart, Target or any other sporting goods store.

how do i tie my belt?

There are a few different ways to tie a belt for your Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu uniform. Click on the links below for some good instructional videos on Youtube:

do we bow to the instructors?

Yes, there are some etiquettes we follow for each different type of class as the traditions for showing respect are different.

In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo classes students bow at the waist to the instructor at the beginning and end of each class. In a Judo class this is done from a standing position, in a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class it’s done while kneeling.

In Muay Thai the sign of respect is called a “Wai” and is done with the hands together in front of your face. This is usually also done only at the beginning and end of class. Youtube video can be seen here:

How to do the Wai

is there sparring in class?

Sparring is not included in any of the Fundamentals classes.  Typically the All Levels and Advanced classes have on open sparring time AFTER the instructional class has ended.  The sparring classes are not an “Open Mat”, they are the sparring time for students who attended the instructional class.  Students wanting to spar in Muay Thai or MMA must get permission from coaches.

Check out our SCHEDULE page for information on our sparring times.

can i come in any time to hit bags?

That depends.  We aren’t always open in between classes and we don’t give students a key to the facility.  You may be okay to use the heavy bags while a class is going on but you will need to clear that with the instructors before.  Please do NOT hit the bags while a kids class is going on.

What if I'm running late?

We understand the terrible traffic issues in our area but please try to be ontime for class.  If you are more than 20 minutes late for a 1 hour class we are likely to tell you to go home or wait for the next class.

What is the best way to speak with someone at the Academy?

Not the phone!  We prefer to handle conversations either in person or through email.  We don’t have staff sitting around taking phone calls, it’s just us coaches and we are usually busy teaching so don’t be surprised if you can’t reach anyone.

IS THERE A LOST & FOUND?

Stuff left out in the training area (water bottles, gloves, mouth pieces, etc.) is moved to the table in the back of the gym near the bathrooms.  Stuff left in the locker rooms is not removed from where it was left.

We will throw items away every week so please be sure to check the locker rooms and/or back table area for your stuff!
